Pat Benatar Rocks... Even Without Drums!

Intimate acoustic set proves that you don't need electricity or drums to rock!

Neil Giraldo & Pat Benatar

It has been about eight years since I last saw Pat Benantar live in concert. It was my first time hearing this voice from my eighties childhood in a live setting. Before the show, we were fortunate enough to meet with Benatar and her husband Neil Giraldo (also known as Spyder). From this meeting, I was able to see the love these two have for each other and how humble they are in the face of their Rockstar status and appreciation for their fans and supporters. Needless to say, their performance was beyand what I had expected. I left the venue looking forward to the next time I would be able to see then again.

Fast forward to May 2019. Last night was my opportunity to see the Benatar/Giraldo duo once again. So many years have passed by since I last saw them and I was wondering if I was going to be disappointed or amazed. Time has a way of taking away what we used to have and, in the case of a singer, I am curious to know if Benatar still has the chops I heard when I last saw her about eight years ago.

The notice posted above the box office gave clear notice that the show last night was sold-out. The venue (The Pavillion) at the Seminole Coconut Creek is a very intimate venue with a great seat for all no matter where you sit. With the audience in place, the lights go down, the crowd erupts into a screaming frenzy and the married rockers walk on stage to a standing ovation.

The performance this time around is an interesting one. It is an acoustic performance consisting only of an acoustic guitar and a grand piano. Giraldo picks up the guitar and starts to play. Benatar grabs the mic and the voice of forty years of music hits begins to sing. When I say that Benatar sounds exactly like she did back in the day, is no lie. I was wondering, however, if her vocals would be able to hold up till the end of the show.

The acoustic performance gave the opportunity for the audience to hear a stripped-down version of the songs and to hear the nuances and the little things we don’t hear in the big studio productions. The gem in this performance are the stories told in between the songs. Not going to give them away, though.

All of the songs you know by heart were performed last night, and even a few that Benatar has not performed in a long while. I would say with absolute certainty, if Pat Benatar is coming to your area, you owe it to yourself to attend this wonderful, entertaining performance. You will regret it if you don’t.

Here is the list of songs performed last night…
